The Measure of a Man Blog

1) Write up your response questions in paragraph form.  Be sure to use examples from the movie and answer in a reflective manner showing thought.
-I think when True AI is achieved, our relationship is going to change, because they will make their own decisions, and they will have emotions. They should be considered "life" if they have creativity, emotions, and curiosity, that's everything a human has. As for humans being allowed to own them, it's not right, and it would be considered slavery. If they are sentient, they realize what humans are doing to them and they could fight back. They should also be considered human because they would be just like us, in  metal and parts. As for rights, I'm in both minds, and I know that's a bit hypocritical, but it would be disastrous if they lost control and fought. But they should also enjoy what we enjoy.

2) Do you believe that AI is going to happen. Explain why or why not.
-I do believe AI is going to happen, especially because we are getting so close to it. The most advanced robot we have is "ASIMO" and he is able to respond to things without anyone telling him. He isn't controlled either. He is able to memorize things and learn something new, just like a human. Even the small things that everyone has, like cars, has some sort of AI, even if it isn't TRUE AI.

3) Will AI be an overall good thing or bad thing?  What is the worst case and best case scenario as you see it?
-Overall, AI should be a good thing. The worst case scenario is if all the robots got together and overtook the humans. But other then that, AI would help all of us in a good way.

4) What was your feeling about the episode "The Measure of a Man". Was it realistic? Did it stimulate thought about the issues?  Is it a valuable use of class time?
-About the episode, I thought it was a good example of TRUE AI and I thought about the rights of "Data" It was pretty realistic, in my opinion. "Data" is a was a good example of what we were talking about in class. I thought it was a good episode. :)
